The City of Tonawanda is located in Erie County, New York and is nestled between the New York State barge canal and the mighty Niagara river. Through the heart of the city runs Ellicott Creek. The city boasts 7 miles of shoreline on navigable waterways through 141 acres of maintained parkland.  The police patrol these areas using an assortment of specialized vehicles including bicycles, all-terrain vehicles and utility task vehicles.


The City of Tonawanda Police Department's Marine Division fills a law enforcement role on the City's waterways and when combined with the Tonawanda Fire Department and provides rescue and recovery services. In addition the City of Tonawanda Police work side by side with other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies ti expand these types of  services to areas including the eastern terminus of Lake Erie and the entire upper Niagara River.


The Marine unit consists of 4 specially trained officers who are certified in marine operations and 12 members of the Tonawanda Police Underwater Recovery Team.  The Marine Unit maintains a 27' state of the art SAFE boat and a 16' dive team trailer.
