E.P.I.C.

New York’s Senior Prescription Plan

Do you need help paying for your prescription drugs? If you are a NYS senior 65 years of age or older, EPIC may be able to help you save 90% of the cost of your prescriptions. NEW- Beginning March 2010, EPIC will start issuing new cards for members. This will apply to members who just recently recertified or joined in February, so if you just received a new EPIC card, you will be getting a new one issued and that will be the one that is effective.

The new cards will no longer have your social security number as the ID. Show your new card to your pharmacy. If you fail to do this, your EPIC will not be active. When you receive your new card you should destroy your old one immediately. To enroll in EPIC, seniors must have annual incomes under $35,000 if single, or under $50,000 if married. Seniors with a Medicaid spend-down plan are eligible, but those with full Medicaid benefits are not. Seniors with moderate incomes pay a low quarterly fee and participate in the Fee Plan. Those with higher incomes participate in the Deductible Plan and must meet an annual deductible. Members who pay a fee or those who have met their deductible, pay a co-payment at the pharmacy when purchasing prescriptions. By using EPIC and Medicare drug coverage together, seniors not only save more on prescription drugs, but have better coverage.

Confused? A representative will be at the center on Wednesday, April 7th, May 25th, and June 15th from 12:30-2:00 pm or call the toll-free EPIC Hotline at 1-800-332-3742 (TTY 1-800-290-9138). Their website is:

SPRINGTIME

Spring, we enjoy the blossoming flowers.

Pleasing aromas in spring are comforting.

Rain showers help the flowers grow.

Ideal time of the year.

Nature is all around us.

Good time to start a garden

Time to plant vegetable and flower seeds.

Inch by inch, we watch the garden grow.

More April showers will come our way.

Each little bud bursts into a bloom.

Advice from A Tree

Stand tall and proud.

Sink your roots into the earth.

Go out on a limb.

Drink plenty of water.

Remember your roots.

Enjoy the view.

2010 Census:

To Define Who We Are As A Nation

What: The census is a count of everyone residing in the United States.

Who: All U.S. residents must be counted- both citizens and non citizens.

When: You will receive your questionnaire in March 2010 either by U.S. mail or hand delivery. Some people in remote areas will be counted in person.

Why: The U.S. Constitution requires a national census once every 10 years to count the population and determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.

How: Households should complete and mail back their questionnaires upon receipt. Households that do not respond may receive a replacement questionnaire in early April. Census takers will visit households that do not return questionnaires to take a count in person.

The Importance of Census Data

  1. E very year, the federal government allocates more than $400 billion to states and communities based, in part, on census data.

  2. Census data are used to determine locations for retail stores, schools, hospitals, new housing developments and other community facilities.

  3. Census data determine boundaries for state and local legislative and congressional districts.

Census Questionnaire: Easy, Important and Safe

  1. With only 10 questions, the 2010 Census questionnaire takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Households are asked to provide key demographic information, including: whether a housing unit is rented or owned; the address of the residence; and the names, genders, ages and races of others living in the household.

  2. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share an individual's responses with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities.

Key Dates:

  1. February- March 2010- Census questionnaire are mailed or delivered to households.

  2. April 1- Census Day

  3. May- July 2010- Census takers visit households that did not return a questionnaire by mail.

  4. December 31- By law, the Census Bureau delivers population counts to the President.
